Top Ten Tips for Training Your Puppy
- Training should begin at 10 weeks of age or older.
- Never repeat a command. Say it once, loud and clear. Repeating is a sign of weakness.
- Never say your pet’s name and the word “no” together. This is not their last name. Your pet’s name is for positive reinforcement, not negative.
- Use high-pitched tones for positive reinforcement.
- Use low pitched tones for negative reinforcement
- Ideally, use positive reinforcement 2/3 of the time and negative reinforcement 1/3 of the time.
- “Punish,” means low pitched verbal reinforcement, never physical punishment.
- Dogs forget within 5 seconds, so there is little point to use reinforcement after that period of time.
- Frequent short walks set at regular intervals*, to a designated area for elimination, and then back to the crate, for 2-3 weeks of training.
- The crate should be big enough for your pup to turn around while inside, but not too big so he/she can poop at the far end.
A helpful equation:
Puppies can hold their bladder (in hours): their age in months + 1
i.e. 3 months +1 = 4 hours
