In Memoriam

It is not time to feed the cats again,
But inter-species dialogue is tough;
The bowl once filled is never full enough,
And feline’s yen exceeds all human ken.

The pessimistic human view contends
That meals too freely offered have a price,
But twice fed tabby’s tale is less precise,
Insisting what’s begun should never end.

Besides, ain’t this the place where meals are set
Before a grateful, weaving, purring pet?
Loving lasts nearly 'til all food is gone,
Knowing you’d not be here unless a meal
Were properly on proffer; that’s the deal
Our species struck before time’s primal dawn.
