Treating Diarrhea in Pets at Home
Pets commonly experience diarrhea, which can be triggered by various factors. As a pet owner, witnessing your furry companion suffer from diarrhea can be worrying, but the positive news is that it can usually be managed with home remedies.
Treating Diarrhea
Treating diarrhea in pets at home in a stable patient:
- Withhold food (but not water) for 12–24 hours—*except* in young puppies, who should be examined by a vet promptly.
- Offer small portions of boiled, boneless chicken with plain white rice.
- Add a small amount of Metamucil or plain pumpkin purée to help regulate digestion.
- If needed, Imodium liquid may be given at 1 tsp per 10 lbs every 8–12 hours—*do not use* in cats, Shelties, Collies, or Old English Sheepdogs.
