What to Expect After Your Pet’s Vaccination
Pets may experience mild side effects after receiving a vaccine, typically within hours of the vaccination. If these side effects persist for more than a day or two, or if your pet is in significant discomfort, please contact your veterinarian.
What to Look Out for
Common Side Effects:
- Sleepiness or lethargy
- Shaking
- Soreness or stiffness at the injection site
- Reduced appetite
Less Common but Concerning Side Effects:
- Swelling of the face
- Persistent itching
- Ongoing vomiting and/or diarrhea
- Collapse
Home Care Tips:
- Monitor your pet closely for the first 24–48 hours.
- Offer soft, warm food if your pet has a decreased appetite.
- Ensure your pet has a quiet, comfortable place to rest.
Medication Guidance:
- Side effects typically resolve within 24–48 hours after vaccination
- Provide soft, warm food to help stimulate appetite if your pet is not eating well
- Benadryl may be used to help relieve mild symptoms (as directed)
Claritin (for dogs only):
- Small pets: 5 mg orally once every 24 hours
- Medium pets: 10 mg orally once every 24 hours
- Large pets: 15 mg orally once every 24 hours
